Transformers have been around for decades- but this success story runs in reverse.  The Transformer toys came first, and then the cartoon show was introduced to further popularize the toy line.  Here’s the original Transformers story.  Transformers are either Autobots or Decepticons.  Autobots are the good guys and Decepticons are the bad guys.  They are all from the planet Cybertron.  The Autobots and Decepticons have been at war with each other for thousands of years.  More than a simple war of Good versus Evil, it is a matter of who controls the world.  If the Decepticons get their hands on the Allspark, then they can rule everything and the entire world will be evil.  The Autobots have made it their mission to keep the Decepticons from getting the Allspark in order to keep the world a free place.  After a battle in outer space, the Autobots and the Decepticons all had a crash landing on Earth.  Now, trapped on Earth by busted spaceships, there is a new battle between the two.  The Decepticons want to siphon the Earth’s energy into Energon Cubes so that they can power their ships and return to Cybertron where there are no more Autobots to defend the Allspark.  So the Autobots must stop the Decepticons from destroying Earth and returning to Cybertron.  Transformers use their abilities to transform into common objects so they can blend into their surroundings on Earth.  They don’t want Earthlings to know about their presence.

What are Transformers?

Transformers toys are alien robots than can transform into different objects or vehicles.  Here is a list of the some of the most popular characters, organized into Autobots (good guys) and Decepticons (bad guys) to make shopping for  Transformers toys easier.

Autobots:
•    Optimus Prime, Leader of the Autobots- a semi truck that turns into a robot (one of the most popular Transformer toys)
•    Bumblebee; a mini Volkswagen that turns into robot
•    Trailbreaker; a black truck with shell that turns into a robot
•    Wheeljack; a white race car that turns into a robot
•    Jetfire; a jet that turns into a robot
•    Blaster; a boom box (the Autobots communications officer,), also a robot
•    Eject; a cassette tape (inside Blaster’s tape deck), that turns into a human-shaped robot
•    Ramhorn; a cassette tape that turns into a rhinoceros robot
•    Grandslam; a cassette tape that turns into a tank
•    Raindance; a cassette tape that turns into a jet (combines with Grandslam to merge into form Slamdance)

There are well over one hundred Decepticons, basically one for every Autobot.  This list is only a partial list of some of the more popular characters, but a comprehensive list in available online.

There are Transformers toys action figures available in 4-inch versions for every one of the Transformers characters.  Some of the most popular characters, such as Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Bumblebee are available in larger 12-inch tall plastic versions.  All the Transformer toys transform just like the ones in the movie and on the TV show.  The smaller action figures come in plastic and die-cast metal versions.  There are also additional Transformer toys available such as coloring books, school supplies and lunch pails, and lots of Transformers clothing for little boys.  There is a Transformers video game available for Nintendo DS and other game systems.

Why Do Boys Love Them So Much?

The Transformers toys are so popular with boys because they are much cooler than the old-fashioned action figures.  They have moving parts that allow the action figures to change from their robot forms into their disguised form.  The Transformer toys provide hours of imaginative play for one boy or for a group of boys.
