My family and I received a demo to do a bop it XT review, and it was a hit before it even made it out of its box. The toy is well packaged with easy access to try out its game play before purchase. It’s easy to remove from its packaging, just a quick snip of a couple of ties and it’s ready to go. It comes supplied with batteries, so within seconds it was in the eager hands of my five, six, and ten year old boys.
So, What Is a Bop It XT?
This game is designed to be held in either hand and can be held horizontally or vertically. It consists of 5 main target areas: “bop it”, a black disc in the middle that is pressed; “twist it”, a yellow cone that is twisted; “pull it”, a blue egg shape that is pulled; “spin it”, an orange rolling disc that is spun; and “flick it”, a green tab that is flicked. There is also an optional “shake it”, a purple button that can be pressed and released to activate the sixth feature. The object of the game is to do whatever the game tells you to do in a couple of seconds before time runs out. It’s a true test of reflexes, and you have to be really quick in order to compete.
Okay, And How Do You Play With It?
There are four different modes of play:
1. Solo
Solo play is just what it sounds like – a solitary battle between the player and the Bop It XT. The player must listen to the directive given by the toy and react correctly in time to get the next command. As the player progresses, the commands begin to come more quickly. If and when the wrong target area is used, it will give a comment based on the game play (usually a positive, like “Aw, you can do this!”) and report the score achieved. My boys really enjoyed challenging each other by trying to beat each other’s high score.
2. Pass It
Pass it is intended for two or more players. The objective is to correctly follow the command given by the Bop It XT before passing the toy to the next player. This game was very hard for my kids, as there didn’t seem to be any additional seconds given, and they had trouble getting the toy in their hands quickly enough to follow the command.
3. Party
In party play, multiple players can compete, and if you do the wrong thing, you’re out. While I can see where this option would be fun with a large group, my boys were really not very interested in this game mode. After an initial trial, they skipped it during every other game play.
4. One on One
By far the favorite of my kids, one on one allows two players to go head to head. Each player holds a handle, with the yellow and green target areas facing up. The players must listen to the commands and respond if the target area is on his her side. Game play ends when one player makes a mistake. A true dream come true for competitive types such as mine, the one on one game option saw lots of playtime.

What Do the Kids Think?

What Does Mom Think?
First, I’d like to thank the great people at Hasbro for including a parental must-have on this toy – a volume control. The BopIt! XT has three different levels of sound: “quiet”, “loud”, and “blast it”. Unlike many toys, this toy’s “quiet” setting actually is quiet. The kids were able to play with it on the quiet setting in the living room without disturbing anyone else. And, unbelievably, the user can even plug in headphones! Wow! Hasbro, moms and dads everywhere salute you. With this ability, it becomes a perfect option for car rides, waiting rooms, or basically anywhere.
As for the game play, it is every bit as fun for adults as it is for kids. It’s engaging, challenging, and quite addictive. I really enjoyed being able to play this with my kids, especially the one on one game mode. The boys all had a great time challenging me one by one (and subsequently defeating me – my reflexes sure aren’t what they used to be!)
The Verdict: Our Final Bop It XT Review
The BopIt XT is truly a great toy. It’s simple to manipulate, yet complex enough to be challenging to the player. While it was a bit difficult for my five year old, he didn’t become discouraged and continued playing despite losing quickly multiple times in a row. The one on one option is great at encouraging paired play, and it enabled my younger ones to play longer with the assistance of their older brother. Fun for both the young and young at heart, this toy is sure to be one that remains a favorite long after the Christmas tree is put away.
