LeapFrog Digital Camera

Digital cameras for kids have been hot items for a couple of years, and the famed LeapFrog Learning Company has finally added to the mix with their new LeapFrog Digital Camera. Unveiled at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it looks a bit like their Leapster 2 Portable Gaming Unit. With easy to grip sides and the traditional green and blue LeapFrog colors, it’s ideal as a first camera for kids.

Due to be released in the first or second quarter of this year, this camera features 2.1 megapixels, a resolution not often available with kid’s cameras, and a built-in flash. Additionally, there’s an optical viewfinder and a 1.5” LCD screen so that kids can choose the method of visualization they prefer. Snapping a picture brings audio pleasure too as LeapFrog characters greet each picture with phrases that include “Great shot” or “Smile for the Camera.”

Fortunately, the fun isn’t just snapping these pictures with the LeapFrog Digital Camera. Once the photo session is finished, the camera can be connected with a USB cable to any home computer, and images can be uploaded and saved. The camera even comes with some software so little photographers everywhere can manipulate each shot. From general photo editing tasks to creative applications like making books with their photos, the software has much to offer today’s tech savvy kids. It even includes games that feature their photos as well as a number of other activities to enhance the learning applications of this camera.

Well known for their education-oriented products over the past several years, LeapFrog’s continual commitment to innovation in electronics for kids is well respected by parents and the educational community alike. The LeapFrog Digital Camera is sure to be a welcome addition to any child’s LeapFrog collection as well as the spur to the creativity so necessary for development in today’s society.

Am I missing something with this camera? My 4 yo son got this for Christmas from his grandparents and I think this camera is junk. For one, it eats batteries like candy and it freezes up almost everytime my son uses it and we have to take the batteries out and replace them to get it to work again. TOTAL JUNK! I will toss this highly overrated piece and get my son a cheaper grown-up type camera to replace it. Needs work, LeapFrog! -s. wensky
