Eco-Friendly Toy Companies

Sprig Toys

These green toys are made from a 100 percent recycled bio-composite material called Sprigwood. The company’s motto is “Where Play Comes Naturally.” The desires of the toymakers whose ideas led to the creation of this company were to promote Earth-friendly toys that would also encourage children to become more active and play with a toy, instead of passively watching a toy perform. They invented the following lines of toys: Adventure Series, Sprig Hollow, Eco-Trucks, and Story Builders. The Adventure Series, for example, offers non-electronic toys that are battery-free. Thus, they can also be used in the bathtub or swimming pool.

Green Toys

Made in the United States, these eco-friendly toys are green and safe. They contain NO lead paint or any other harmful substances. They save energy and reduce greenhouse gases, and they conform to safety standards set for toys. They are made from recycled milk jugs, a very gifted idea. The company focuses on how to make the Earth a better place, beginning with safe toys for children. The toys are locally made from Step 1 to the Final Product in California. This also reduces the transportation footprint of importing materials, or the final product, from overseas. The company estimates that every one pound of recycled milk jugs saves the equivalent of 3,000 AAA batteries, electricity to operate a television for three weeks, or enough power to run a laptop computer for one month.

Blue Orange

This company has chosen wood to be its material of choice for green toys. Each year, beginning in 2006, this manufacturer, who is based in China, has given back more and more to the environment by planting trees. They made a commitment to plant two trees for every one they used in making a child’s toy. They state the average tree use is 35 toys or games per tree. They partnered with the Chinese Forest Office to annually replant trees. This organization received the first “Green Toy Company Award” ever issued on April 22, 2007. Concern for environmental issues has rightfully grown in the last few decades, and this company wants to do their fair share and then some to help.

Plan Toys

This organization practices the familiar “Three R’s” of living green: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. They believe in the beauty of the natural environment and want to help preserve it, while also making eco-friendly toys that are worthwhile to children. The company uses only materials that are environment-friendly to craft their toys. The material of choice is organic rubberwood that is not treated with any chemicals. The cost of manufacturing toys in this manner is approximately 20-25 percent more than its plastic counterpart, but if it is safe and healthy for your child, and helps save the environment, it is worth it.

miYim

This organization wants to teach values as well as environmental responsibility by producing green toys. The company began its drive to help the world by growing organic food; then took its commitment a step further by integrating a child’s playthings. Toy collections include Fairytale Plush, Fairytale Knit, Peaceful Dreams, Sleepytime, and Storybook characters each dressed in certified organic clothing. Cotton and embroidery are all colored using natural processes which leave the material that your child touches unprocessed, untreated, and unbleached. Each is designed to capture your child’s imagination. The toys are all cuddly, huggable, and lovable, and your child is sure to fall in love with these natural collections.

Under the Nile

The eco-friendly toys manufactured by this company include over 200 products, including not only toys but clothing as well. Each one is composed of 100 percent organic cotton and comes with the USDA Organic seal. The company became concerned with an identified sensitivity that children sometimes have to certain dyes in clothing and materials. The quest began for the best organic cotton in the world and ended in Egypt, hence the business name. Besides bibs and clothing, the company also creates toy fruits and vegetables, which is meant to align the child with healthier eating. As well, the company serves a program in Egypt for impoverished families by helping to provide healthier living conditions there.

Wonderworld

The manufacturer of these green toys strives to play a big role in saving the environment. Only rubberwood that is can be replanted is used in construction of this company’s toys. Materials used to make these toys are safe and non-toxic, and have been certified to meet United States and European international standards. Their designs have been recognized for their creative influence on children, and also for promoting interaction between parents and child. Their environmentally friendly toys include Eco House, Beads Frame, My Choo Choo Train, and Rainbow Sound Blocks. This company also sponsors a program that replants trees and recently traveled to an area of Thailand to do just that.

HaPe

This company has the philosophy of making happy toys for happy children. It was begun in 1986 with an effort that sold toys directly to kindergartens in Germany, later expanding to Switzerland. The company has continued to expand internationally, extending its reach to the United States and Canada. They want their toys to encourage each child’s unique personality and developmental skills. Each toy goes through a battery of tests with respect to safety and the composition of the toy. These green toys run the gambit from being fun to also being thought-provoking and educational.

Choosing a good, safe, solid toy for your child can be made a little easier when you read about the effort and commitment companies such as the ones listed above employ. They try to make the best possible product for your child with the least harm to the environment.
