Dinosaur toys are very popular with boys and even with some girls. There have been lots of movies starring cartoon dinosaurs that talk and even a few computer generated dinosaur movies that look like there are real dinosaurs still roaming the earth on some movie set somewhere. Kids love dinosaurs because they are huge and fierce, and due to their absence on the planet, they have reached the mythical status of dragons and sea creatures in the minds of children. Two of the most popular species of dinosaurs are the huge and fearsome tyrannosaurus rex (or t-rex for short) and the tiny yet terrifying velociraptor (or just raptor). Some of the other popular species are the three-horned triceratops, the large and majestic Apatosaurus (formerly known as Brontosaurus) or his cousin, the brachiosaurus- both of these species have very long necks. Another species that has become popular recently is the fearsome carnotaurus, or carnotaur, which looks a lot like a t-rex except that he has spikes on his head and back. There are numerous other dinosaur species available in toy form, but now you know how to identify the ones boys love the best.

Types of Dinosaur Toys

Robotic dinosaur toys are very popular with kids, because they can walk, swing their tails and roar just like in the movies. These robot toys range in technology level (and in price) from the simple, button operated versions that stand less than a foot tall to the more advanced ones that are remote controlled and can respond to voice commands. There are several versions of these toys available made by numerous different companies. They are all made of plastic and are designed to be tough and rugged to withstand frequent use by children. These are all battery operated toys, so it is best to stock up on batteries when you buy a robot dinosaur.

For the youngest dinosaur fans, there are many different kinds of plush dinosaur toys available. Plush toys are basically stuffed animals, but with the softest fur that feels like silk. Any of the popular dinosaur species are available in plush toy versions. Ranging in size from just a few inches tall to giant versions that are as big as a toddler, a plush dinosaur toy can be your child’s best take- along friend or the snuggly pal that keeps him safe when he’s in bed at night. Plush toys are a great choice for babies and toddler as well as some of the youngest elementary school kids.

Another type of dinosaur toy that kids love is the dinosaur action figure. Three to four inches tall, they don’t walk or roar but they can be posed into different action postures as any other action figure and your child can have a very large collection of them for a very reasonable price. Kids can line the shelves in the bedroom with entire herds of dinosaurs and can have lots of pretend play fun. They are totally portable, so your child may want to load all his dino friends into a backpack and take them along on road trips or vacations- which is fine because they don’t make any noise to distract the driver. There are also lots of non- movable dinosaur figures that are smaller than the action figure versions. These often come in a bag that contains two or three dozen, so he’ll have a collection of dinosaur toys with one inexpensive purchase. These are also popular dinosaur toys with kids, although toddlers should not be allowed to chew on them because they can end up biting off an arm or leg.
