Why Families Love LEGO Board Games

LEGO used to be simple building blocks, but now they’ve expanded to video games, more complex models, and now board games. These board games are a ton of fun for the entire family because children get the joy of playing with LEGOs and parents can have that great nostalgic feeling – after all, who didn’t play with LEGOs as a kid? These are the kinds of games that everyone will love, and each one is different so whether your family likes to play with ninjas or loves Harry Potter, LEGO has created a little bit of something for everyone.

Best LEGO Board Games

heroica Heroica: The great thing about LEGO board games is that you never know just how big they might get. Heroica is an excellent example. It begins as a smaller game, but each one can be put together to form a giant Heroica game for everyone to play. Each Heroica game on its own has a different goal and foe for the players to defeat. Once they all come together, it’s all about defeating the evil Goblin King and saving all of Heroica! But first, everyone has to pitch in and build the game board first because, after all, it is LEGO, and what’s LEGO without a bit of building?
champion Champion: There is a trophy to be won, but you can’t have it unless you become the LEGO Champion! There are many challenges in the way, each one ready to stop players in their tracks, but there is a way past them. Built for ages 7 and up, Champion is a game for 3-8 players. Players have to build the track as they go and try to reach the finish as quickly as possible. It’s a great game where no one knows what challenges might lurk around the corner. It doesn’t matter if you’re 7 or 70, LEGO is ready to provide the entire family with some great LEGO fun.
ninjago Ninjago: Some of the best toys for kids feature ninjas. Even adults will agree with that. Why? Because ninjas are cool! LEGO brings out their Ninjago board game where skeleton adversaries seek to destroy the Ninja Fortress. However, the Ninjas are ready to fight back. It’s ninja combat, rope swinging adventure, and evil skeleton battling time! Built for ages 8 and up, 2-4 players can sit down and tackle the board with plenty of excitement. Will you be able to stop the Skeleton General? Build the game according to the directions and then prepare for battle.
ramses return Ramses Return: Mummies. Ancient Egypt. Pyramids. There are a lot of things out in the desert sand that are dangerous. Of course, that means it’s time to excavate them and see what’s going on! Especially when there is LEGO gold to be had. Inside King Ramses’s pyramid, his treasure of ages awaits discovery. Should it be risked? Or will the mummy of King Ramses put a stop to that with his ancient curse? Players 7 and up will find out as they gather mysterious crystals to make their way through the pyramid. Great for 2-4 players.
frog rush Frog Rush: Need to be somewhere Mr. Frog? You betcha! All the frogs want to go home, at the same time. The problem? Home is on the other side of the pond – which might not be so bad if the pond didn’t have a hungry stork lurking around! Players 7 and up will have to carefully get their frogs from one side to another as quickly as they can before the stork swoops in and gobbles them up. Made for 2-4 players, the game needs to be built first in classic LEGO style, and then it’s up to a roll of the dice to see who goes first and what happens next.
meteor strike Meteor Strike: Who said meteors were dangerous? LEGO board games like to do things differently, which is why in this game meteors are extremely valuable! There’s no dodging here. Instead, you want to gather up as many of those meteors as possible. Look out though – your opponents want to do exactly the same thing! Built for just two players ages 7 and up, its fast and simple action as you race to launch satellites that will guide the meteors to your moon base. But be careful because your opponent will do the same, and perhaps even take out your satellite with a laser. Not if you build a laser first though!
pirate plank Pirate Plank: Who be tryin’ to steal the Captain’s treasure? Everyone, by the looks of it! But there is a chance. As you and other players head down the plank, if you can knock the other players off their planks and deliver them to the hungry sharks below first, you’ll be safe (and you’ll be the winner!). 2-4 players ages 7 and up will roll the dice and work their way toward the edge, all the while seeing if they can outlast their opponents. What’s almost as much fun as this game? Building it of course! Before anyone can play, there’s a pirate ship to build!
creationary Creationary: One of LEGO’s most popular board games, it can support a wider range of players. Three to eight players of ages 7 and up can crowd around this board game and play until the sun goes down. Roll the dice to select one of four categories: buildings, nature, things, or vehicles. When you choose a card, it’s time to get building. This is where each player has to bring their imagination and building skills to the game. Players must guess what it is you are creating. Guessing well and building well will score players points, and whoever has the most points at the end of a round wins.
harry potter hogwarts Harry Potter Hogwarts: LEGO board games knows when to go big. Harry Potter is great at Quidditch, throwing spells at bad wizards, and even riding dragons. There may not be any actual magic involved with this game, but it may certainly seem like it. Crafted for ages 8 and up, Harry Potter Hogwarts can support 2-4 players. There are many secret passageways and moving staircases within Hogwarts that players will have to navigate through. Will you go the right way, or make a mistake? Better be sure, because you have homework to collect and need to get back to your common room before it gets too late.
minotaurus Minotaurus: The old legend of the Minotaur says that the creature was hidden away in a labyrinth. A massive maze from which there was no return. LEGO has their own take on this legend with the Minotaurus game. Their Minotaur protects a secret temple that each player wants to reach. 2-4 players ages 7 and up have to avoid the minotaur around every turn, and place walls in just the right places to block off opponents. Build the maze first before heading into it and remember – you never know when or where the Minotaur will strike, so move wisely.
race 3000 Race 3000: It’s a race to the finish. The best toys for kids know how to make even the simplest of things exciting, and that’s exactly what LEGO does here. Kids have to build their game board first, either following the model or coming up with their own design. Made for 2-4 players ages 7 and up, the goal is to cross the finish line first to win the trophy. There are shortcuts that can be taken or turbo boost power to use in order to zoom past opponents, but look out for things that will slow you down like oil slicks.
pirate code Pirate Code: It’s a game of luck and logic with pirates involved. Arr, matey, there be plenty of treasure, but there be no sharin’! Everyone has different codes to keep their treasure hidden. But there’s more than that – if you discover their codes before they find out yours, you can become the Pirate Captain. This game is made for 2-4 players of ages 8 and up, so there’s plenty of pirate fun to go around. And what about that pirate skeleton in the middle of the game? Should players be worried about him? Maybe not…or maybe so…
lava dragon Lava Dragon: LEGO board games are often never the same game twice. Lava Dragon is one of these games. Players ages 7 and up must prove that they are the bravest knight in the land and summon the dragon from the top of the volcano. 2-4 players must each find a way to summon the dragon without letting their opponents get ahead of them and avoiding the hot lava on the volcano. You never know what might happen with a game of dragons and lava! The LEGO dice may roll in your favor or in favor of your opponents!
monster 4 Monster 4: Ghosts and ghouls lurk in the dark. Skeletons and monsters play in the graveyard. Can you get all your monsters in a row? It sounds easier than it truly is. Especially with a giant spider that likes to jump around and scare everybody off. Monster 4 is made for 2-4 players ages 7 and up, perfect for kids who need a fun yet clever game to play. Monster pieces are complete with scary faces and the spider has googley eyes. Of course, kids can’t play without building the game board first. That’s almost as much fun as the game itself.

When Did LEGO Start Making Board Games?

LEGO board games came to life around 2009 when LEGO decided to create something different. What better than a game that kids and adults had to build? Kids get to learn how to use LEGOs and then have the joy of playing a game with them. Adults can immerse themselves in the fun of playing with LEGOs again while they enjoy time with their children.

Creationary is one of the most well-known games and one of the first to emerge from the LEGO game family. Building from scratch, something adults will love and kids will get a kick out of make it a family favorite. Afterward, more games followed, such as Racers, Bionicle, and more. Some games have since been retired, but new games continue to be crafted by LEGO. One of the highlights that LEGO designers included when making their games is giving players the ability to change not only the rules, but the entire board as well.

Not only are LEGO board games fun to play and excellent for the whole family, but unlike many other board games, the rules and the game itself can easily be changed. Made of LEGOs, they can be built in different ways and rules shifted to provide a fun, new game many times.
