Many adults may remember the days of the old game, a mix of tic-tac-toe goals and checkers-like game pieces. The next generation gets to play Connect 4×4, which allows more people to play and provides a rather interesting way of doing so.

Double the Fun
The grid is no longer just a flat panel that allows only two players to slip in checkers. Instead, it is a double-sided grid that allows for checkers on either side. Each player takes a turn and pops in a checker as they aim to connect four horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Or they might be trying to block an opponent from doing so.
The biggest difference with Connect 4×4 is the ways players can win. Because the grid is double-sided, four checkers do not necessarily have to be adjacent to one another. Instead, players can win by “weaving” checkers into a line. For example, a player drops two checkers on one side, and then two on another side. If all four are dropped horizontally with no checker in a space between them (on either side), then that player can win. It’s a unique way of winning and will certainly stretch brain power more than the original game.
But that’s not all. Each player also gets two blockers. Blockers are double sided, so a player can drop one in and block either side of the board in one play. Strategic use of blockers can even keep a player away from an empty space below.
Connect 4×4 is one of those games that can get kids into a zone where they play for hours. The same can also be true of adults. It’s a good game for family get-togethers or at kids’ parties. Enough playing time will soon create skilled players that will be tough to beat in any situation.
