LEGO fans a new way of battling evil. LEGO Ninjago action figures have brought children’s natural curiosity about martial arts to new levels. Those who love to build with LEGOS will also love the whirling action of these spinning warriors.
What is LEGO Ninjago?
Since LEGO introduced the minifigure, kids have scrambled to collect the newest and most unique among them. This new series is a series of martial arts themed warrior and skeleton army minifigures that work with the LEGO building sets children already have in their collection. But they’re unlike any others because they carry out their combat on spinning discs made of LEGOS. It’s easily one of the most creative additions to this line of construction toys in the last two decades.
The Details
For the LEGO guru who also has a fascination with all things martial arts, the LEGO Ninjago figures are sure to be on the most requested list. LEGO has actually created their own imaginary martial art—spinjitsu. The sixteen characters in the collection are each individuals. They can belong to either the human faction or the evil skeleton army. Their weapons are their swords and the spinning bases the figures stand on.
Unlike the previous ninja series of minifigures that LEGO released, these are distinct from one another and include vehicles suggesting a more modern setting for battle. The idea is to master the art of spinjitsu by defeating enemies in action and also with the included game cards. Heroes include Sensei Wu, Jay, Kai, Cole, Nya and Zane. Each is fighting for a certain purpose and also has his own unique weapon such as a lightening sword. Bad guys are all skeletons and include Lord Garmadon who is the ultimate unbalance in the world. His fearful lightning bolt terrorizes his brother, Sensei Wu, and the humans. He is, of course, from the underworld and wants to take everyone down with him. Many other characters are included as well.
What We Liked About LEGO Ninjago
• These minifigures really tap into a child’s love of martial arts.
• The size of the figures helps with hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
• Children can trade with others at school for the figure they’ve been wanting.
• The figures are easy to travel with or tuck into a backpack.
• The imaginative element in spinjitsu allows for children to go far beyond just what’s in front of them to create a world of their own.
• There are enough figures so children won’t get tired of just one or two.
What Parents Thought
As with any LEGO product, parents tend to have definite opinions. Many parents don’t like the small size of the f LEGO Ninjago figures as they can tend to get lost easily. And there’s always a danger of smaller babies choking on parts. But parents of older children tend to love that the figures leave so much room for the imagination to take over. Also, many parents encourage a love of and participation in the martial arts, and the ninjas help support that. Good versus evil is a theme in this set, so any parent who is not comfortable with their child battling with (albeit harmless) skeletons may not want to indulge them with this set. But most agree that it is all in the name of fun and that the figures allow kids to share amongst their friends and collect a relatively inexpensive LEGO item that they’ll have for years to come. Children do have to build their own figures, so parents like the fact that the pieces require thought and planning.
LEGO battles rage on and children love being the star warriors. Action figures that have such a great story behind them, as these ninjas do, make for hours of playtime in the imagination zone. Skeletons versus humans is a great way to pass the time any day.
