Little boys and trucks go together like peanut butter and jelly. Give a boy a dump truck and he’ll immediately go to “work” loading, hauling and dumping whatever payload he can find. Until now, toy trucks have completely relied on the energy of children to make them go. Matchbox Rocky the Robot Truck is the company’s newest innovation. Rocky is a fully interactive vehicle the manufacture bills as a boy’s best buddy. He talks, sings, dances and still functions as a regular push-around dump truck. A number of interactive features are sure to make this truck a big hit with kids.

Actions

This toy does more that roll around and has quite the personality. He “stands” on the back four wheels and lifts the front pair up in the air. This is also the movement he uses to dump a load from his truck bed. He can dance by moving left and right while in this standing position. He says more than 80 different phrases, which include jokes, and plays his own dance music. His musical repertoire includes country, hip hop and rock. Matchbox Rocky the Robot Truck will sleep and snore when he gets tired and he even does push-ups.

Features

Rocky does all his tricks with the help of motion and sound sensors. Sensors in the truck bed detect a load and many of his actions are voice activated, keeping children engaged with the toy during play. He has LED lights that blink and flash to provide visual stimulation along with the auditory input. With so many features it would have been easy to make the interface complicated, but Matchbox has done a great job keeping it simple enough for little boys to play with it unassisted by adults. Most of his actions are controlled by a lever located on side of his cab and cleverly disguised as his exhaust pipe. Rocky is also a regular toy truck, the kind little boys spend hours shoving from room to room. He’s got sturdy wheels and a large bed that holds plenty of rocks or small toys to load and dump.

Matchbox Rocky the Robot Dump Truck packs of a lot of technology into one toy. While robotic toys have come down in price to a reasonable price, they haven’t quite reached the bargain level yet. At a suggested retail of around $59.99, this toy is not a bargain, but it’s still well within in the realm of a special birthday gift or a holiday present. All in all, Rocky is an innovative spin on a favorite concept.
