KaZAM Balance Bike

Anyone who says “It’s as easy as riding a bike” has not recently had to learn how. They probably haven’t had to watch their child struggle and they surely haven’t had to apply bandages to the skinned knees and elbows that inevitably accompany the process of learning how to ride a bike. Learning to balance and pedal simultaneously takes a lot of time and practice and produces a lot of scrapes. You may never forget how to ride a bike, but the learning curve is a tough one. The makers of the KaZAM Balance Bike say that they have developed a better way to learn how to ride a bike.

Description

The KaZAM Balance Bike is a steel bike designed for teaching children from three to six years old how to ride a bike. It’s made of steel and available in pink or blue. Its stance is low to the ground, which is appropriate for the age range. A unique step-through design put the center bar just above ground level so that kids can get on and off easily. A wide foot rest is located on the center bar. What makes this bike truly different is that it does not have pedals.

How it works

Before a child can pedal, he has to learn how to keep his balance. This training bike allows a child to do what comes naturally. He sits on the bike and pushes with his feet to build speed. This is what a child usually does when he tries to ride a big kid’s bike but the pedals often get in the way. Once he has some momentum, he can put his feet on the foot rest and practice steering while coasting. He can practice keeping his balance without a set of spinning pedals to worry about. It also gives him a natural place to rest his feet when coasting, unlike other balance bikes that force the child to hold his legs up and out.

Features

The seat features a quick release adjustment. That mechanism makes it a snap for parents to raise or lower the seat according to their child’s height. Air-filled tires with spokes give the bike the look and feel of a big kid’s bike and make transitioning easier.

Critiques

The KaZAM Balance Bike is designed to work itself out of a job. Once a child has learned balance, he will be ready for a traditional bike. However, a toddler usually starts on a very small bike and moves up to the next size in only a summer or so anyway. Why not spend a summer learning on this bike and avoid a few spills? Also, this bike is not safe for hills since it has no brakes. A flat riding surface is required.
